You can analyze your emotional eating. You can know your triggers. You can go to therapy. And yet, emotional eating can still show up. This is one of the most confusing places to be, because you have so much insight and awareness and yet nothing is actually shifting your emotional eating. So you feel stuck.

There’s just a difference between insight and actual behaviour change. So you might understand your compulsion, but you’re still actively in your compulsion with food. So the mind is trying to solve this problem by analyzing it, noticing patterns, but the body keeps repeating the same behaviour.

This doesn’t mean that you’re failing. It just means that you’re looking in the wrong place.

Therapy is really great for awareness and insight – helping you think about your patterns so things start making sense. But what I found working with clients is that what we think is creating our emotional eating isn’t always what’s at the root of the pattern.

The thing is, emotional eating patterns weren’t created cognitively. They were created as a survival mechanism – as a way to create safety, soothe discomfort, manage stress, and cope with unmet needs. And simply understanding the pattern doesn’t automatically tell your body that it’s safe to let go of it.
