If you struggle with emotional eating, you may genuinely feel food is the problem. You eat something you didn’t plan to eat and you just can’t seem to stop. You eat when you’re stressed, upset, lonely, or bored.
And then you think, “Why can’t I just control myself around food?”.
So, naturally, food seems like the enemy. But what if I told you something deeper is going on that’s running this behaviour, that’s making you go to food when you really don’t want to?
Today, I want to show you what’s really underneath that feeling of being out of control with food, and why trying to control it harder actually backfires.
What you see with your behaviour with food is the tip of the iceberg. You see yourself feeling out of control with food, going to food when you don’t really want to. You feel like you’re overeating. There are cravings popping up. You have obsessive thoughts about food. You’re eating when you’re not actually hungry, and you have guilt afterwards. This is what you’re seeing on the surface.
And because this is the visible part of your behaviour, this is what you try to change in your relationship with food.
So, you go on a diet to try to control your out of control behaviour with food, you download the next meal plan. You’re counting calories. You’re counting macros. You are obsessing about food.
If you mess up, you tell yourself, “I’m gonna have more discipline tomorrow. I’m going to start again”.
You try to control your behaviour with food, but under the surface, if we were to think of this as an iceberg, under the water, there’s so much more going on that’s actually creating this behaviour that we need to look at.
And this is where the real work starts.
