So let me guess, you think you emotionally eat because you have no willpower?

You have snacks in the cupboard, and you tell yourself, “I’m not going eat them.” But then a stressful day hits, and you beeline to the cupboard.

And suddenly, you’re eating all the cookies, the chips, the snacks…whatever you can find.

Then this voice comes over you as you;re stuffing your face and says, “What’s wrong with you? Why can’t you control yourself? Why are you doing this?”

But what if I told you it wasn’t because you didn’t have any willpower, that there was something deeper going on?

And it’s not that you’re incapable of controlling yourself around food. Once you understand that something more profound is going on, your emotional eating will make much more sense.

The real reason you’re emotionally eating is not because you’re weak. It’s because there’s something happening inside of you that you don’t know how to process.

An emotion gets triggered. Maybe it’s a stressful day at work. Maybe it’s a rejection. Maybe you feel overwhelmed. Maybe you feel lonely. All of a sudden, you start feeling like you’re not good enough. Maybe something happens, and it brings up an old emotional experience.

And in that moment, you feel uncomfortable, and you may not even register that something has happened. But your brain remembers: “Oh, when I feel this way, let’s go to food. Food helps us feel better.”

So you reach for food not because you’re hungry. And it’s not because you lack discipline. It’s because you learned early on in your life that food was the way you could make yourself feel better.

And that’s really what emotional eating is.
