Have you noticed the pendulum swing? Swinging from years of dieting to intuitive eating, where you eat whatever you want but your emotional eating still remains.
You might be asking yourself: I stopped dieting, why do I still feel so out of control? This really isn’t about choosing one side or another, it’s about what each side doesn’t address.
I used to emotionally eat and I tried both approaches, swinging from a diet mentality to intuitive eating. I see this in my clients too, and neither side really worked.
Let’s dive in and talk about what diet culture, and dieting are really about. Diets are about specific rules and restrictions.
They tend to be control based and ignore your body’s natural cues, focusing on external “rules”. Usually, foods are categorized as “good or bad”, with a morality attached. When you fail at these diets, shame follows, and you spiral.
When we restrict, as diets expect us to do, that creates stress in our nervous system in few ways. Physiologically, our body and brain need calories and nutrients. Restriction triggers constant thoughts about food, the “food noise” in our heads.
Then, when you give into this food noise, you feel shame. You spiral and eat more to cope with the discomfort.
Essentially, diets disconnect you from your body’s actual needs. They also add a layer of shame when you can’t stick to the rules, which make you feel worse. This cycle perpetuates emotional eating.
On the other side, is intuitive eating. Often, when we’re fed up with diets and rules, we swing completely in the other direction, throwing everything out the window and eating whatever comes to mind. This is not helpful as well.
