You’re not broken because you can’t stick to a diet. What if I told you that sticking to diets and having a diet mental is actually triggering your emotional eating? 

If you’ve ever told yourself “I’m going to start again Monday, I’m going to stick to the diet”, and you end up eating all of the foods you restricted then this video is going to help you understand why that’s happening.

What is diet mentality? 

The way I see diet mentality is this:  if you’re on a diet and you keep trying to stick to the rules and the regulations of that diet, your mindset becomes completely focused on those rules.

I also see clients who have a lot of food rules. They might not think they’re on a diet, but they have absorbed so many beliefs about how they should eat. For example: you shouldn’t eat past 7 p.m.; your plate should be “this” small; have more protein; less fat; fewer carbs; or you should intermittent fast, etc.

Even though these aren’t necessarily part of a formal diet, they’re part of the health noise out there telling you how you “should” eat.

These ideas feed into a diet mentality, and you start creating rules for yourself that come from outside of you—without actually knowing what your body needs. This happens because you disconnected from your body a long time ago. Especially as an emotional eater, you began using food to soothe discomfort, distress, or any uncomfortable emotions that came up.

Then, you started using diets to control your “out of control behaviour” with food. You replaced one set of “out of control” behaviours with another set of rules you could “control”. Along the way, you were never taught to understand your own body and what you actually need. You keep thinking there’s something outside of you that’s going to give you the results to make you feel good.
