If you’ve been trying to fix your emotional eating by controlling it, stopping it, or just getting rid of it – and it’s still there, this might be the reason why.

What if the thing you’ve been resisting is actually the doorway to your healing?

Let’s get into it.

A lot of women that I work with are very self aware. They’ve gone to therapy, and tried many things to resolve their emotional eating. They usually know it’s not hunger. And every time that they emotionally eat, they tell themselves “I shouldn’t be doing this. What’s wrong with me?”

Of course, what follows is shame, guilt, and feeling like you’re broken. That then triggers even more emotional eating, and you’re back in the cycle.

So the pattern goes: you’re triggered, you emotionally eat, you judge yourself for, you feel shame and guilt and that leads to more emotional eating.  The cycle repeats.

Naturally, the instinct might be: I need more discipline. I need to control this. I need to solve this. But what if that’s what’s keeping the cycle going – at least in part?

When I work with women, one of the key things I share is this: it’s not about completely stopping emotional eating right away. It’s about accepting where you are at with it. Part of this is also accepting your body, your physical self, as it is right now.

I usually get a lot of eye rolls when I talk about body acceptance. Maybe you’re not losing weight or you feel like you should be further ahead. That means you’re not an acceptance of where you’re at in this moment.

And acceptance is not about “I’ll just be this way forever!” or “I’m fine with being this way”. It means acknowledging your current reality without fighting it.
