A lot of women believe that if they just lost the weight, their obsession with food would stop.
And this leads to a lot of women to get weight loss surgery. But what many women are shocked to learn is that while they initially have motivation and momentum after the surgery, and they are losing weight, their emotional eating urges eventually come back.
So yes, you can physically eat less, but that emotional urge to eat is still there. Because emotional eating doesn’t start in your stomach. It starts much deeper.
I just want to say this as a caveat: I’m not against surgery or anything like that. Each person has to make that decision for themselves. But I do believe that everyone should understand what they’re getting themselves into.
I’ve worked with a lot of women who had surgery thinking it would help them with their emotional eating. And initially, while they’re motivated and losing weight, things feel better. But after a while, their emotional eating kicks back in, and it’s even more torturous because now their body can’t eat the same amount of food.
So, I want to talk a little bit about this misconception that automatically changing your body is going to change your relationship to food.
Because I believe a lot of women see weight loss as this goalpost where everything finally falls into place. They will finally feel okay about themselves, confident, they’ll have the willpower, they’ll be able to make the right choices around food. But I’ve just seen time and time again, that’s not the case.
If you struggle with emotional eating, it’s not a physical fulness issue. It’s not a stomach issue. It goes beyond that.
