What if one of the things keeping you stuck in your emotional eating is your desire to get away from your emotions?

So I want to tell you a story about a client of mine who came to me after using plant medicine because she wanted to change the way she felt about food and stop emotionally eating.

She had used plant medicine to help her with her emotional eating, and the medicine kept telling her the same message: she needed to figure out how to find ease, peace and oneness in real life – not just by using this modality.

When she felt that one with the universe, she felt at peace. This is a very euphoric feeling. If we don’t know how to experience ease and peace in our day-to-day life, the way we’re living and the emotions we’re feeling can start to feel torturous. And that can trigger us into emotional eating.

So, this experience she had was pretty amazing because it showed her she needed to find a way to feel this peace in her day-to-day life. I thought this was really profound because this is the day-to-day work we need to do to actually heal.

Not just by finding a way to escape the discomfort we’re feeling, but learning how to move through it and transform it.

I think there was something we often misunderstand about emotional eating. We feel like we must escape it. We want relief. Of course, it feels torturous to be eating food and feeling out of control.

You might realize you feel anxious, sad, or overwhelmed. And you don’t necessarily want to sit there and just feel all of that. You want it to stop.

And that’s exactly what food does. It gives you temporary relief. Much like that plant medicine journey gave my client relief, food is doing something very similar.

Let’s dive in.
