Hello love,

I wanted to talk about self-worth—because this is usually what we are chasing by doing the diets, doing the exercise, and trying to get rid of our emotional eating.

We feel a lot of shame and we feel if we could finally get rid of the body we are in or the emotional eating we would feel at peace, we would have confidence.

We would have self-worth.

But what is driving this pattern is our sense of low self-worth.

And no body or behaviour change will give this to us.

When we have emotional eating, it means that when we were younger—we didn’t have the modelling from our parents or caregivers to move through our discomfort, distress, and uncomfortable emotions.

We weren’t seen or heard or validated in our experience.

And when this happens to a young child, their sense of worth and value falls to the wayside.

They start thinking something must be wrong with them because they are being rejected and not seen in their experience.

So they start looking around: “What will make me worthy?”

At the same time as feeling this rejection and discomfort is the shame that you’re not good enough.

So you’re trying to deal with these uncomfortable emotions in your body, but also looking for ways to help you feel more worthy from the outside.

So you use food as a coping mechanism—you emotionally eat to deal with the discomfort, the distress, and the shame that comes up.

And you chase the diet, the exercise, you fight the urges so you can finally be “good enough.” when you can control food and your body.

The broken record, right?

I’ll finally be good enough when…

I’ll finally feel loved and accepted when…

And what’s driving this is a sense of unworthiness. But we’ve been chasing the wrong thing.
