Hello love,

When you’re an emotional eater, you are usually trying to control food.

And you don’t know if you’re actually hungry, snacking, or emotionally eating.

This can be really frustrating.

But you need to be able to discern this.

This comes up a lot with clients – this confusion about what they are feeling. “Is it emotional eating, or am I just snacking?”

There’s so much confusion about their bodies and hunger.

This is why we need to look at emotional eating in different layers. We also need to understand what emotional eating is so we can discern these layers.

Emotional eating is a coping mechanism – it’s when you use food to soothe yourself from discomfort and distress, essentially from uncomfortable emotions.

You do this because you don’t know how to move through your emotions, how to regulate yourself, and how to process emotions to get to a place of ease and calm.

So, when you’re not able to do that, the discomfort of the emotions can feel intense, and from a young age, you may have started using food to soothe.

So now, as time goes by, food becomes an outlet. Life is busy and stressful, more triggers come up. We try to fight the urge, use diets, and rely on willpower to not give in because emotional eating has consequences.

So, when all of this is happening, it’s hard to know what hunger feels like in the body because it’s been so confusing from a really young age.

And if you don’t know what true hunger looks like in your body, if you don’t know how to nourish yourself so that you are satisfying your hunger, if you don’t know how to tell when you’re being triggered into emotional eating, if you don’t know what emotions feel like in your body — you’re going to get lost in this pattern.

It’s not about finding the “right” diet or controlling food.
