Hello love,
Let’s talk about anxiety and its connection to emotional eating because the two can be very closely intertwined.
I wanted to bring up this connection because it’s a pattern I often see with clients.
It makes sense, but sometimes we don’t really notice what’s happening with our emotional eating.
When I’m working with clients, I often start to notice this link between their anxiety and their emotional eating even when they might not see it themselves.
They may not be fully aware of the anxiety or worry they’re experiencing throughout the day that’s contributing to their emotional eating. Sometimes they’re dealing with anxiety, even taking medication for it, and still emotionally eating and it can be hard to recognize that the two are connected.
So when we’re doing this work together to resolve emotional eating, we look at a few key things. Because anxiety, if you think about it, is really a form of discomfort we’re feeling.
And yes, it’s uncomfortable and of course, if we don’t know what to do with that discomfort, we naturally want to fix it. If we’ve been feeling anxious and don’t know how to manage it, we might turn to food as a coping mechanism to soothe or numb the discomfort.
We might have started turning to food at a young age to help us feel okay, especially if our parents or caregivers weren’t able to support us in navigating anxiety or emotional distress.
Trust me, I see this often with clients. They’re adults now, and if they haven’t been able to move through these patterns and they have children – they struggle to guide their kids through it too. Their parents were likely the same way. So this anxiety can feel overwhelming, even overpowering.
