Hello love,

When we emotionally eat, we often believe that the answer is simply controlling food and our body.

We think:
“Of course I gained weight – I ate too much. I overate.”
It seems like a straightforward cause and effect, but the truth is, it’s far more complex.

Emotional eating is a coping mechanism. Looking back at my own journey, I was trapped in the same belief. I thought I needed to control food and my body, and I hear the same from many women I work with.

But when we rely on traditional methods like diets or extreme exercise to control food and our body, and they don’t help us stop emotional eating, it’s time to dig deeper.

Here’s the truth: when we emotionally eat, we’re trying to soothe ourselves from discomfort, distress, or difficult emotions.

But here’s the catch — we’re not actually physically hungry. And eating when we’re not truly hungry can affect our bodies in several ways.

Let’s break it down:

  • 1:00 – Not Physically Hungry
When we eat when we’re not hungry, our bodies aren’t ready to properly digest the food, leading to consequences.
  • 2:09 – Impact on Digestion & Mood
This doesn’t just affect digestion, but it can also disrupt our mood and even trigger more emotional eating.
  • 2:51 – Emotional Eating Triggers
What’s behind our emotional eating? Stress and emotional discomfort put our bodies into a state of fight or flight, leading to physical symptoms like bloating, fatigue, and anxiety.
  • 3:45 – Addressing the Root Cause
To break the cycle, we need to shift both our emotional eating habits and our nervous system response to stress.
  • 4:45 – Root Causes vs. Band-Aids
Instead of using temporary solutions or “band-aids” to mask physical symptoms (like dieting or over-exercising), let’s address the deeper emotional causes of our eating habits.
  • 5:25 – Achieving Sustainable Change
To create lasting peace with food and your body, we must address emotional eating at its root, not just treat the surface symptoms.
