Hello love,
I wanted to share what I believe is the secret to stopping emotional eating, and what is often overlooked. While there’s no magic bullet for solving emotional eating, I think this comes pretty close.
A lot of women miss this:
Emotions.
Think about it: emotional eating is driven by emotions.
You would think this would be obvious—it’s right there, staring us in the face. Yet, we tend to turn to diets, exercise plans, and even “talking” about our emotions in therapy, but we don’t truly understand what emotions are and why they drive this behavior.
Instead, we chase after the latest shiny “solution” for emotional eating, without directly addressing the root issue.
Emotional eating is a coping mechanism—it’s where we use food to soothe our emotions. It doesn’t resolve our emotions or help us process them. We’re using food as a Band-Aid, rather than meeting our true needs, which our emotions are trying to communicate to us.
Moving through our emotions isn’t about intellectualizing them. It’s about accepting and acknowledging them in an embodied way.
We can name our emotions—say we’re happy, sad, angry, etc. But how many of us actually move through our emotions?
As emotional eaters, we’re not doing that. Instead, we turn to food to soothe our discomfort.
