Hello love,
Disclaimer: I have nothing against therapy, if you use this modality and it works for you great. But if you’ve been trying talk therapy to help your emotional eating and it hasn’t worked then stick around.
Years ago when I struggled with emotional eating part of my process to resolving my emotional eating was going to talk therapy, CBT to be exact. One of the main issues I wanted to resolve was my out of control behaviour with food, my bingeing, restriction, dieting and emotional eating. I was in therapy for almost 2 years diligently going to weekly sessions.
It didn’t help me resolve my Emotional Eating or create any significant change. At one point my therapist handed me a diet book in an effort to help me. But it did not connect me back to my body.
From that point in therapy I had gone to see a nutritionist, a chiropractor and had also had personal training. I didn’t just do a few one off sessions I spent months with each of these practitioners in an effort to create true change. I also spent a lot of my time diving into all the psychology information I could find to help myself.
But it didn’t move the needle.
The biggest impact my Emotional Eating was having on me was feeling out of control with food, my body, impacting my self esteem, and with my confidence. Going to therapy was helpful in that you talk to someone and have some relief but after I didn’t know what to tangibly do. I was given a few exercises on distorted thoughts, and affirmations. I diligently stuck to these hoping one day they would work.
I spent years doing these exercises.
Then after being frustrated with no progress I threw everything out the window, moved to Korea, switched careers from being an analytical chemist to a teacher.
I wanted a fresh start but my Emotional Eating was even more in my face and I had to figure it out.
