Emotional Eating Trigger Series: Emotional Eating in the Evenings

One of my clients would emotionally eat in the evenings. This was happening daily around dinner time before her partner would leave for work.

In the past she would binge eat or go to her mother’s (which meant more food and takeout and a bottle of wine).

She knew she needed to change this and get to the root because even with therapy for several years her Emotional Eating was happening daily. In one of our somatic sessions we used this trigger and got to the root which was a trauma (unresolved event) in her childhood.

What we did:

1. We got to the specific root to this trigger in the body through the tools in The Emotional Eating Evolution Program
2. We processed and integrated the emotions and met her deeper needs on a body level (being seen, belonging, connection)
3. This left her feeling more whole and confident and she now knew how to meet her her emotional needs vs. using food. She also saw what she needed in her relationships and what boundaries to keep.

How I shifted my thoughts to feel better (about my body)

For a long time I couldn’t pass by the mirror and say something nice to myself. I just didn’t feel good enough.

This was tied into my emotional eating. Not feeling good would spiral into using food to soothe and the cycle would start again.

Most of the time I didn’t notice this incessant voice, I just walked around in feeling uneasy in my body and saying something negative as I passed by a mirror.

I thought when I finally reached “that” body I would magically feel better. The compliments would roll in and I would feel good. But that didn’t last very long and I was back to my self worth crumbling because I built it on sand.

I didn’t feel good. Cue soothing with food.

But I knew I needed to get out of this cycle and that led me to Body Acceptance. I learned to be ok with myself right now and appreciate the function of my body beyond appearance. To detach my self worth from my body.

That my legs let me walk all over the city. Or my eyes let me see.

Acceptance helped with that critical voice that created so much stress that played a part in creating the physical body I punished. It wasn’t that I liked or loved my reflection, but I was no longer bullying myself. Exhale.

Once I started to accept my body it lessened my triggers and Emotional Eating. My body started to shift from fight or flight to rest and digest. Better mood, better digestion, more energy, more confidence and eventually releasing weight.

This along with True Nourishment and Emotional Wellness shifted my emotional eating pattern (the 2 other phases in The Emotional Eating Evolution Program) and it’s been over 10 years since I’ve emotionally eaten.

Emotional Eating and the Mother Wound👇🏽

I wanted to dive a bit deeper into Emotional Eating and the mother wound because this is at the core of the work I do with clients.

I think of this pattern as coming from not having our needs modelled by our mother and not having “that mothering” that we see in the media.

When I think about mothering and I think about society and what we see versus what my clients experience it is very different. So there is this idealized version of the mother we see and the “other” version they usually experience.

In the past when I would share my experience of my relationship to my mother and what was happening a lot of the times people felt uncomfortable because it would trigger their own discomfort. And no one wants to see their mother in this certain way.

So when I am working with clients and they tell me about their experience with their mother it makes all the sense in the world that they have Emotional Eating as a coping mechanism.

So let’s dive into the mother wound and why it impacts your Emotional Eating and how to start resolving it to get to ease and peace around food and in your body!

3 ways to know if you’re ready to change…your emotional eating pattern👇🏻

1️⃣The pain you’re in is greater than the pain of change (yes change is uncomfortable but worth it!). You’re ready to do the uncomfortable thing (like get support, devote the time, stop the excuses, do the deeper work vs. the quick fixes)

2️⃣You still feel some fear but are sick of staying the same, it’s a drain on your energy.

3️⃣You’re ready to take responsibility for your pattern and stop blaming everything outside of you (your past, your failed attempts, etc). You’re ready to look at yourself - the good, the bad, the ugly (you know what I mean).

🔥BONUS: You feel the possibility of change, you’ve seen others do it and are ready to follow in their footsteps.

I had to reach all of these benchmarks in order to finally say “I’m done with this pattern and am going to figure it out”.

Just because the practitioners I saw couldn’t help me I could feel there was a way out. I saw women who were confident and at ease around food, their body and in their life. AND when life got tough they knew how to ride the waves gracefully.

When Kelly started the program she had been to therapy on and off for years. She knew something more was going on. In the past she had reached the “body” she thought would get her the love + validation she craved but once she was there she still felt empty and the shame lingered.

Tangibly this looked like:
👉🏽a shift in digestion (from IBS for years and loose stools to normal BMs)
👉🏽no more bingeing after a few weeks (from over 1.5 years of daily bingeing)

👉🏽lost 30lbs (on her way to “her healthy” as weightloss can be a byproduct of the program)
👉🏽using the tools daily for life triggers
👉🏽rarely bingeing (+ has the tools to resolve it!)
👉🏽getting engaged!
👉🏽still feeling motivated and continuing❤️

What do you choose? The discomfort of staying in your Emotional Eating or the discomfort of Growth?

While I teach women to get to ease and confidence around food and in their body it requires a level of change.

And any type of change requires you to step outside of your comfort zone which creates an element of discomfort because you’re hitting up against your limits and walls.

So you have to decide, is the discomfort of staying the same worth it? Or the discomfort of getting to the other side where ease and confidence live?

I know what choice I would make and maybe you don’t realize there is a choice you are making either way.

A lot of the times when I talk to women who struggle with Emotional Eating they have been in this cycle for years and decades and they seem to be falling into the same trap of the quick fixes, the solutions that tell them it’s going to be easy and they don’t realize that they need more support to get to the other side.

Any level of growth requires discomfort because we have to step outside of our comfort zone. Our comfort zone feels comfortable because we are used to it, not because it’s actually comfortable. Because we’re familiar with it – it registers as safe.

To do something different requires new emotions and some level of discomfort.

AND if you are an emotional eater when you hit up against this discomfort or distress that triggers more Emotional Eating. But you need to move through this to get to the other side.

It’s like thinking you should be able to do math intuitively but you don’t have the foundation and skills (yet) like my son who’s in grade 4. This creates unnecessary shame.

I see the same thing with clients when they finally realize their Emotional Eating is now an issue after trying to do all the things that don’t actually help them (the diets, supplements, pills, surgeries, therapy, willpower, affirmations, etc etc). These are bandaids vs. actual solutions.

I see the holes because I’ve been there and out the other side. It’s like a math problem and we need the right approach to figure it out.

What you need:

1.understand what Emotional Eating is (a coping mechanism) that requires more than just bandaids
2.This means you need a different solution that gets to all the layers of your emotional eating
(food, body, emotions)
3.And have a step by step process to get to the root with emotional eating urges to resolve them (creating ease + peace around food and in your body).

Emotional Eating Trigger Series: Triggered at dinner with your girlfriends

I thought it would be fun to share what triggers might look like and how to work with them. I enjoy them the most with clients because we get to actually dive deep and transform your pattern!

I didn’t mention in the video but before you get to your Emotional Eating trigger you have to know you’re emotionally eating from an emotion not starvation.

In this example my client was triggered eating out with her girlfriends because she was waiting to be externally validated to not feel shame. Growing up she saw that being thin or pretty and getting compliments meant she was accepted.

She didn’t get the compliments (validation) she wanted and this made her feel not good enough (shame).

Shame triggered her Emotional Eating.

What we did:

1. We got to the specific root to this trigger in the body through the tools in The Emotional Eating Evolution Program
2. We processed and integrated the emotions and met her deeper needs on a body level (validation, being seen, and accepted as she is)
3. This left her feeling more whole and confident in general and not wanting food to fill that void.

Emotional Eating is at the Tip of the Iceberg👇🏽

It’s so much more than just about food or your body.

When you emotionally eat it is the tip or the iceberg. You see your out of control behaviour with food, the obsessive thoughts about food and your body, and just feeling out of control and think it’s about food and your body.

But it’s so much more than this.

Just like an iceberg, this is the tip and there is so much more going on under the surface.

Emotional Eating has all these layers because it is a coping mechanism. It would have began in childhood where your parents or caregivers didn’t model how to be with emotions or provide the safety needed for you to express how you were feeling.

This means you were left with these uncomfortable emotions and had to cope to escape this discomfort. Food is great at giving us a dopamine hit, it distracts us and numbs us temporarily. It’s how you soothe yourself when you get triggered.

Along the way this coping mechanism impacts your relationship with food, your body and originally your emotions in an unhealthy way.
You have to start looking beyond *just* our behaviour with food and our body and look at the real reasons we created this coping mechanism to resolve this pattern.

You have to look at your relationship to food, your body and emotions but go deeper than just the behaviours or actions around them.
